Tabby patterns are made up of a 'marking' colour and a 'ground' colour. Each individual hair will have two or three bands of each, but these bands can be arranged differently on different hairs (see the 'Getting The Stripes Off The Body' section of this link). The different arrangements of bands group together to form tabby 'patterns', where the 'marking' colour forms a pattern over the 'ground' colour. There are four types of tabby pattern:

Spotted Tabby
In 'real life', there are two types of spotted tabby cats. One type has the classic tabby pattern 'broken up' into spots, and the other one the mackerel tabby pattern. On PF, the spotted tabby pattern does not vary dependant on the underlying tabby pattern, so Ticked, Mackerel and Classic Tabby can look the same. The markings on the face and forehead are typical tabby markings. Tail is ringed. Lower legs have no 'marking' colour.

Ticked Tabby (Abyssinian)
Body hairs are ticked with various shades of marking colour and ground colour, but there is little grouping of like-coloured hairs, resulting in the cat being free of 'typical' tabby markings. Most of the body will appear the same colour, although the underside will be lighter. The face and tail will show slight 'tabby striping' but the lower legs will have no 'marking' colour. The difference between a ticked tabby and a solid-colour cat is that in a ticked tabby the body appears 'dusted' with the ground colour instead of being truly solid.

Mackerel Tabby
Markings dense, clearly defined, and all narrow pencillings. Upper legs evenly barred with narrow bracelets coming up to meet the body markings. Tail ringed. Side markings come to points on the chest. Head barred with an 'M' on the forehead. Narrow pencillings run around the body. Lower legs are free of 'marking' colour.

Classic Tabby (Blotched Tabby)
Markings dense, clearly defined, and broad. Upper legs evenly barred with bracelets coming up to meet the body markings. Tail evenly ringed. Side markings come to blunt points on the chest. Frown marks on forehead form an intricate letter 'M'. Swirls on cheeks. Vertical lines over back of head extend to shoulder markings which are in the shape of a butterfly with both upper and lower wings distinctly outlined and marked with dots inside outline. Side markings are 'blotches' of colour surrounded by broad rings. Lower legs are free of 'marking' colour.

With any tabby, the named colour refers to the 'marking' colour rather than the base colour, so a Blue Tabby is one with blue markings. Spotted, Mackerel and Classic tabby respond in much the same way to the different colours, but Ticked tabby is different due to the lack of solid markings. The effect of the different colours on 'Tabby' (Spotted, Mackerel and Classic) and 'Ticked Tabby' are detailed below:
